Surely the card business surrounding Eid is dead now, says the officials of Azad Products, a leading card-making company of the country. Who sends a text message now? I just write a Facebook post.” Then I learned about it from my other colleagues. We knew nothing about sending or receiving Eid messages. Reminiscing the good old days, Additya said: “I came into Dhaka from Nilphamari after finishing college. In fact, nobody in his contact lists escaped from receiving messages as her daughter would help him write a universal text message for everyone and would just press the “send to all” button in the “send” option of the phone. Not only Eid cards, even the era of text messages is gone now.ĥ7-year-old Additya Alam, a contractor by profession, used to send at least 300-500 messages every Eid greeting all his business associates, clients, friends, and families. But whenever someone crosses my stall, they’ll surely stop once and will look over the cards,” he said.īusiness isn’t that bad either, at least the kids would request their parents to buy one, and quite affordable too as any card costs Tk10. Apparently, people still have an interest in cards, I mean they think it’s a waste and nobody values them much. I have set up this stall solely out of fun and nostalgia. “I work as an office staff at a corporate office, this (Eid card stall) is not my job. Somehow, he also shares the same nostalgia of sharing Eid greetings with friends and family through cards and just looking out if someone also feels like taking a walk down memory lane. But quite surprisingly, the time isn’t still far gone for 27-year-old Shahed Ali who has set up a makeshift Eid card stall this Eid at Jahuri Moholla of Babar Road area in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur. If unfortunately, I couldn’t do it for even one Eid, I'd buy small Eid cards from the corner street shop of our school and would hand them out to my friends with a very guilty face, but I'd surely never forget to put a heartfelt message. But I remember, how meticulously I used to spend time during my school days before Eid to make Eid cards with art papers, colour pencils, signed pens, stickers, and so on. Right now, while I'm writing this story, I can completely relate to the phenomenon of sending warm wishes to loved ones on Eid or any other important occasion. Technology has become a game-changer in the way humans communicate, and just like that, it has changed the way people exchange greetings on festive occasions. In the age of robust tech-savvy generations who are living through globalization, the fourth industrial revolution, and all the experiments to make people’s lives convenient and prompt, every other expression of human emotion has gone through a dynamic change.
